Racing preview (Sept 12): Winx ready as George Main field takes shape

Updated: September 11, 2017

In the Group 2 Warwick Stakes, Winx had to chase down stablemate Foxplay to win and gave away many lengths to Red Excitement in the Chelmsford Stakes before catching him 50 metres out. Those two will be among her opponents again in Saturday’s Group 1 George Main Stakes (1600m) at Randwick as she aims for her 20th successive victory; overall 2017-18 season record (WIN-PLACE-UNPLACED): 80-5-116, +28.6 units

Champion Winx will have up to 10 rivals when she defends the George Main Stakes at Randwick on Saturday in her first Group 1 race of the spring. Among the 11 nominations for Saturday’s 1600m-race are stablemate Foxplay and the Gerald Ryan-trained Red Excitement, the two horses she had to run down in the Warwick Stakes and Chelmsford Stakes respectively. The Chris Waller-trained Winx will be attempting to extend her winning streak to 20 after her two thrilling wins this campaign. Far from being concerned Winx has had to fight for her two wins this campaign, trainer Chris Waller believes they have shown just how good she is.

• Brisbane’s dry spell has taken a severe toll on horse numbers with only 71 runners in nine races at Doomben. Only four races on Saturday’s card had each-way betting. There were only 62 runners at the other metropolitan meeting in Queensland last week at Ipswich. It has also hit jockeys in the pocket with 15 riders having one or two mounts at the Doomben meeting. Less than half the average rainfall was recorded in the Brisbane area in August and temperatures were well above average for the month. Trainers are saying they have turned out horses who need soft or rain-affected tracks.

• Racing Victoria stewards have reviewed the start of a race at Geelong and decided against charging jockey Stephen Baster for not taking part in the event. Baster restrained his mount, the favourite Spring Choice, out of the fourth race on Friday believing it to be a false start. The review found Strathbyrne kicked the barrier which resulted in Spring Choice and several other runners lunging forward. Baster gave evidence to stewards he heard a call to “pull ’em up” but after questioning all riders, the clerk of course and the starters, the jockey’s evidence was unable to be corroborated.
