Move that left a city ‘Raven’ mad: The Inside Word’s mail for September 6

Art Modell, who died on this day (September 6 in 2012), led a rich life in his 87 years but in the eyes of the US sporting public, his name will always be indelibly etched with the decision to move the NFL Cleveland Browns to Baltimore. Modell’s Browns were among the best teams of the 1960s, led during his first years as owner by legendary running back Jim Brown. Cleveland won the NFL championship in 1964 and played in the title game in 1965, 1968 and 1969. After the Colts had left Baltimore for Indianapolis at the end of the 1983 season, Modell returned football to Maryland in 1996 although the Browns’ name remained in Cleveland for an expansion franchise that was formed three years later. Ironically, the financial issues Modell cited for leaving Cleveland led to him selling the Ravens in 2003, three years after they’d defeated the New York Giants in Super Bowl XXXV.
