Got a Devil’s haircut in my mind: The Inside Word’s mail for September 16

Updated: September 15, 2017

We’re planning to put the fear of God into the bookies today so let’s honour the man that had one of the best job titles in history. The Reverend Gabriele Amorth, who died on this day (September 16 last year) was an Italian Roman Catholic Priest and an exorcist of the Diocese of Rome who claimed to have performed tens of thousands of exorcisms over his 60-plus years as a Catholic Priest. He was better known as “the Vatican’s chief exorcist”. He believed that a person may be possessed by more than one demon at once, sometimes numbering in the thousands! Amorth also famously warned parents about J. K. Rowling’s Harry Potter novels, stating that the books attempt to make a false distinction between black and white magic when the distinction “does not exist, because magic is always a turn to the devil”. Gotcha, dude.

MLB betting (September 16)

The Dodgers (94-52) beat the Nationals (89-57) in five games last year in the National League Division Series, and the teams are on track to finish with the two best records in the league this year. Alex Wood is an All-Star and has been excellent for the Dodgers this season but he has struggled recently – 0-2 with a 6.35 ERA and a 1.35 WHIP in his past three starts. Wood faces a Washington line-up that ranks third in average and fourth in slugging in the majors against lefties this season. Edwin Jackson is 1-2 with a 6.60 ERA and a 1.73 WHIP in his past three for the Nationals; overall record: 308-16-271, +48.65 units

NCAA Football week 3 betting (September 16)

The anticipation of Hurricane Irma was enough to cancel the Bulls’ game at Connecticut last week but they return to Florida tonight for a pivotal week 3 match-up against Illinois. Illinois are aiming for a third successive victory to open the season and will face their most difficult challenge yet when coach Lovie Smith’s team returns to the site of his last job with NFL’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers. USF were not that sharp in their first two games, despite putting up 73 points combined and winning by an average of 17. Senior quarterback Quinton Flowers leads the way for a talented offense that can beat foes with the run and the pass. The Bulls did not practice over the weekend after the UConn game was canceled and will have to brush off some rust; overall record: 11-1-6, +5.32 units

CFL week 13 betting (September 16)

The Saskatchewan Roughriders and Hamilton Tiger-Cats have been able to find their stride in recent weeks to make up ground in their respective CFL divisions. After a rocky start to the season in which the Ticats dropped their first eight games and appointed a new head coach, the Black and Gold are riding a two-game winning streak. Kevin Glenn left last week’s 48-28 Banjo Bowl loss to Winnipeg late in the third quarter with an injury to his right throwing hand and did not return. He is questionable for this game. If he doesn’t start, take the home team; overall record: 18-1-12, +10.31 units
