UEFA Champions League betting: Spurs unhappy home away from home

UEFA Champions League matchday 1 action continues tonight with Groups E, F, G and H scheduled for their first continental games of the new season. For our best of the night, it’s off to Wembley where Spurs will host one of just three German clubs to have lifted Europe’s greatest club trophy – Borussia Dortmund.

UEFA Champions League matchday 1, Group H: Tottenham Hotspur v Borussia Dortmund
Where: Wembley Stadium, London, England
When: Thursday, September 14, 4.45am (AET)
Prices: Tottenham $2.25, Dortmund $3.10, DRAW $3.50

Confirmed bet: -2.5/total (two units @ $2.20)

TIW says: With White Hart Lane being redeveloped, Tottenham are playing all home fixtures at Wembley this season (including European games for the second season in a row). Indeed, Spurs have won once in 11 appearances over the past nine years at the home of English football. They won just once in four European matches in 2016-17, they can ill-afford a repeat as they kick-off their Champions League campaign against German giants Borussia Dortmund tonight. Points are ultra-important in this group as Spurs have been placed along side Real Madrid and APOEL Nicosia to go with Dortmund.

This is Tottenham’s third appearance in the group stage and a second foray in as many seasons – the first time in club history they have managed successive European Cup campaigns. Spurs have won only two of their past nine Champions League games (D2 L5). Having gone through the 2016-17 Premier League campaign unbeaten at home (W17 D2), Spurs lost 2-1 to Chelsea in their first match of the season at Wembley. They drew 1-1 with visiting Burnley FC, who equalised in added time, the following weekend. Tottenham’s Dele Alli starts a three-game European ban after he was sent off for a dangerous tackle when Gent knocked them out of the Europa League in February.

Tottenham and Dortmund’s only previous encounter was in the last 16 of the 2015-16 Europa League. The German side won 5-1 on aggregate (3-0 in Germany, 2-1 in England). But this is a bad spot for the German visitors, who could be without up to nine first-team players through injury. They have plenty of absentees – Neven Subotic fell ill two days ago, captain Marcel Schmelzer (ankle ligaments) and fellow defender Marc Bartra (groin) have not travelled to London. Also likely to miss are Julian Weigl (ankle), Andre Schurrle (thigh), Sebastian Rode (knock) and Erik Durm (hip). Raphael Guerreiro is recovering from a foot operation, and Marco Reus from knee surgery.

Reus has scored 12 goals and delivered four assists in his past 16 Champions League games. Still, Dortmund are unbeaten this season, with a German Cup win over Rielasingen-Arlen and two wins and a draw in the Bundesliga. Dortmund started the season by losing 5-4 on penalties to FC Bayern München in the German Super Cup. This is Borussia Dortmund’s 12th appearance in the Champions League – only Bayern Munich boast more among German clubs (21). Dortmund have reached the knockout stages in their past four Champions League campaigns. This includes 2012-13 when they were beaten finalists against Bayern Munich.
