MLB betting (September 12): Cleveland closing on Oakland’s winning mark

Updated: September 11, 2017

The hottest team in Major League Baseball welcomes the Tigers to town tonight as the Cleveland Indians, riding an 18-game win streak, will send Carlos Carrasco to the mound opposite rookie Myles Jaye. The 2002 Oakland Athletics, who went on to win 20 in a row, are the only other team in the expansion era (since 1961) with a streak that long. By completing their fifth straight series sweep on Sunday against the Orioles, the Indians (87-56) passed the Astros for the best record in the American League; overall record: 292-16-265, +37.38 units

TIW says: We’ve continued to line our pockets with thanks to the Cleveland Indians and see no reason not to stick with the runaway AL Central leaders. The last time the Indians faced the Detroit Tigers was on September 3, winning that game 11-1 for their 12th win in a row. The Indians haven’t lost since and tonight attempt to extend their franchise-record winning streak to 19 games.

Cleveland’s streak started with a 13-6 win over the Boston Red Sox on August 24. The Indians then swept three games – all shutouts – from the Kansas City Royals, three from the New York Yankees, four from the Tigers, four from the Chicago White Sox and three from the Baltimore Orioles. The Indians will send Carlos Carrasco (pictured below) to the mound.

He’d be the no. 1 starter on a lot of teams, but with Cleveland, he is behind Corey Kluber. Carrasco ranks among the American League leaders in numerous pitching categories. In his past three starts, he is 2-0 with a 0.78 ERA, a .188 opponents’ batting average, 25 strikeouts and no walks in 23 innings. In his most recent outing, a 5-1 win over the White Sox on Wednesday, Carrasco pitched a three-hit complete game on 97 pitches, facing just 28 batters, one over the minimum.

He recorded nine strikeouts without issuing a walk. This will be Carrasco’s sixth start of the season against Detroit. In the first five, he went 3-1 with a 2.14 ERA. In his career against the Tigers, he is 9-7 with a 4.09 ERA. Detroit will start Myles Jaye, who will be making his first major league start and just his third appearance. Jaye has pitched 5 2/3 scoreless innings, allowing three hits and two walks with no strikeouts.

Jaye did spend most of the season as a starter. In a combined 25 starts between Double-A Erie and Triple-A Toledo, he was 4-13 with a 3.96 ERA. Jaye made his major league debut on September 2 against Cleveland, when he pitched 3 1/3 scoreless innings, yielding two hits with no walks or strikeouts. Detroit and Cleveland will both be missing starters for this series opener.

Tigers shortstop Jose Iglesias, who was on the paternity list, was activated over the weekend but was unable to join the team over the weekend in Toronto. Iglesias and his family had to evacuate their home in Miami due to Hurricane Irma. The Indians will be without center fielder Bradley Zimmer, who broke a bone in his left hand diving into first base in last night’s game.
