NFL week 1 betting: Peterson returns to Minnesota with Saints for opener

Updated: September 11, 2017

September 11 commemorations will play a major part of pre-game activities in a rare Monday night double-header (New Orleans Saints @ Minnesota Vikings & Los Angeles Chargers @ Denver Broncos) to complete week 1 in the NFL. Our NFL expert James Potter had a superb session yesterday with a return on investment of more than 50 per cent! His tips are included alongside our previews here; overall results: 15-1-8, +12.77 units

NFL week 1: New Orleans Saints @ Minnesota Vikings
Where: U.S. Bank Stadium, Minneapolis, MN
When: Tuesday, September 12, 9.10am (AET)
Lines: Minnesota -3, O/U 48

Confirmed bets: New Orleans Saints +3 @ Minnesota Vikings (three units @ $2.00; New Orleans Saints @ Minnesota Vikings -48 (one unit @ $1.93)

TIW says: Adrian Peterson’s Hall of Fame-type career with the Minnesota Vikings ended on a sour note following a tumultuous past three seasons. Sour feelings were bound to follow as Minnesota moved on from its all-time leading rusher. The Vikings never showed a desire to re-sign Peterson, the 32-year-old running back who had rushed for 11,747 yards in 10 seasons. Peterson signed with the New Orleans Saints in the offseason, joining a backfield that already had 1000-yard rusher Mark Ingram and drafted Alvin Kamara in the third round. The NFL schedule makers didn’t wait to reunite Peterson and his former team. The Saints’ offense has started and stopped for 11 seasons with quarterback Drew Brees.

New Orleans traded receiver Brandin Cooks to the New England Patriots and signed Ted Ginn to be the no. 2 receiver with Michael Thomas, who had a standout rookie year. The Saints led the NFL in total offense last year at 426 yards per game. The Vikings had the league’s third-ranked defense last season, allowing 314.9 yards per game. They return nearly every starter, including five who made the Pro Bowl – linebacker Anthony Barr, defensive end Everson Griffen, defensive tackle Linval Joseph, cornerback Xavier Rhodes and safety Harrison Smith. Offensively, the Vikings have replaced Peterson with veteran Latavius Murray and second-round draft pick Dalvin Cook, along with holdover Jerick McKinnon.

NFL week 1: Los Angeles Chargers @ Denver Broncos
Where: Sports Authority Field at Mile High, Denver, CO
When: Tuesday, September 12, 12.20pm (AET)
Lines: Denver -3, O/U 43

Confirmed bets: Los Angeles Chargers +3 @ Denver Broncos (two units @ $1.91); Los Angeles Chargers @ Denver Broncos +43 (one unit @ $2.00)

TIW says: The Denver Broncos aim to rebound from a poor season by their standards, while the Los Angeles Chargers begin a new era when the two long-time AFC West rivals meet at the Mile High. Both teams feature new coaches (Vance Joseph for Denver, Anthony Lynn for Los Angeles) while the Chargers play their first game since unceremoniously ditching San Diego after 56 seasons. The Broncos missed the playoffs last season after winning the Super Bowl following the 2015 campaign and once again will revolve around a defense led by star linebacker Von Miller. Denver rehired Mike McCoy to revive the offense after he spent the last four seasons as the Chargers’ coach.

His record was a woeful 9-23 over the past two years before being fired. Trevor Siemian starts his second year as a starter after passing for 3401 yards last season and has a solid pair of receivers at his disposal in Demaryius Thomas (five successive 1000-yard seasons) and Emmanuel Sanders (three in a row). Running back C.J. Anderson is healthy after playing just seven games in 2016. Philip Rivers still wings the ball all over the field at age 35 and has topped 4000 yards eight times to go with five seasons of 30 or more TD passes. Veteran Antonio Gates has 111 career touchdown receptions – tied with Tony Gonzalez for most by a tight end in NFL history.
