Yes, there was a Colonel Sanders and he did create Kentucky Fried Chicken. Colonel Harland David Sanders (born on this day, September 9, in 1890) worked in numerous jobs until he started selling fried chicken from his roadside restaurant in North Corbin, Kentucky, during the Great Depression. Sanders recognised the potential of the restaurant franchising concept, and the first KFC franchise opened in Utah in 1952. The company’s rapid expansion across the United States and overseas was overwhelming for Sanders and, in 1964, he sold the company to a group of for $2 million ($15.4 million today). He wasn’t a military Colonel, rather a Kentucky colonel – a title bestowed in recognition of noteworthy accomplishments and outstanding service to the community. Sanders passed away on December 16, 1980 at the age of 90.

While most people are talking about the Indians and Diamondbacks respective impressive winning streaks, the American League leading Houston Astros have quietly won seven straight. They go for eight in a row tonight when they visit the A’s in Oakland. CFL week 12 betting (September 9)

It’s been a typically wacko season in the CFL with West teams totally dominating the East. There’s only one East v West match-up this week as the BC Lions host the Montreal Alouettes. We were bullish on the Als earlier in the campaign but after last week’s 32-4 setback to Ottawa, we’re not keen to invest in them here. The BC Lions also have something to prove as they’ve been winless for more than a month but with Travis Lulay taking the ball tonight, the Lions should tear Darian Durant and Montreal apart; overall record: 17-1-12, +7.49 units

CFL week 12: Montreal Alouettes (3-0-7, 0-0-4 away) @ BC Lions (5-0-5, 2-0-2 home)

Edmonton Eskimos @ Calgary Stampeders -10 (two units @ $2.00) WIN (18-39)

NCAAF week 2 betting (September 9)

With a Heisman Trophy candidate (Mason Rudolph) at quarterback and a strong running game, no. 11 Oklahoma State will again flex their offensive might as they take on South Alabama in Mobile tonight. The Cowboys were 66th nationally in rushing last season at 170.8 yards per game, but gained nearly double that amount (332) in their season-opening 59-24 victory over Tulsa. This Jaguars team will provide sterner opposition.  Last year, South Alabama went on the road to stun Mississippi State and knocked off #19 San Diego State at home, 42-24, on its way to a bowl game; overall record: 10-1-5, +4.36 units

AFL week 1 finals betting (September 9)

AFL finals action continues today with a pair of elimination finals. In the first match-up, the rampaging Sydney Swans host the Bombers. Essendon have already achieved a significant result by reaching the top eight but the red-hot Swans should be far too classy in this spot. NRL week 1 finals (September 9)

There are two NRL finals scheduled today, kicking off with a qualifying showdown between the Storm and Eels. Cameron Smith plays his 356th NRL game to break Darren Lockyer’s record. While the Eels have been in fine form, stopping the minor premiers on Smith’s big day is a massive task. The later game features the Sea Eagles and Panthers in a cut-throat elimination final. Manly take the better form of the two teams into the match, with Penrith losing their past two while they are also missing skipper Matt Moylan.

NRL qualifying final: Melbourne Storm (20-4) v Parramatta Eels (16-8)
Where: AAMI Park, Melbourne, Vic
When: Saturday, September 9, 4.10pm (AET)
Line: Storm -12, O/U 37.5

EPL betting (September 9-10)

The raw data suggests that this should be a tight affair but we’re expecting a defensively bereft affair as Manchester City host Liverpool in the EPL match of the day. Both these sides are on seven points after three games but it’s Liverpool who will come into this encounter full of confidence after thrashing Arsenal just before the international break. With his explosive front three of Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and Mo Salah having already banged in nine goals between them, Jurgen Klopp has the tools to cause City real damage on the break; overall record: 3-0-4, -2.28 units

Confirmed betting

Manchester City v Liverpool +3.5/total (two units @ $2.35)
Everton +1/hcp v Tottenham Hotspur (two units @ $1.75)
Brighton & Hove Albion v West Bromwich Albion DRAW (one unit @ $3.00)
Southampton v Watford +1/hcp (one unit @ $2.20)

Today’s other games

Arsenal v AFC Bournemouth
Leicester City v Chelsea
Stoke City v Manchester United

Results update: 0-0-3, -5.0 units

Manchester United v Leicester City +2.5/total (three units @ $1.60) LOSE (2-0)
Bournemouth v Manchester City/WIN to nil (one unit @ $2.15) LOSE (1-2)
Watford WIN v Brighton & Hove Albion (one unit @ $2.00) LOSE (0-0)
