MLB betting (September 8): Indians on track for new winning streak mark

By
Updated: September 7, 2017

When Corey Kluber takes the mound against the White Sox in Chicago tonight, he’ll have a chance to help the Indians accomplish history. The Tribe matched its franchise record (set last season) with its 14th win in a row, and the club will have a chance to set a new mark with Kluber (14-4, 2.56 ERA) on the mound here. Cleveland joined the 1935-36 Cubs and 1912-13 Giants as the only clubs with winning streaks of 14 or more in consecutive seasons; overall record: 288-15-259, +38.38 units

MLB best of the day: Cleveland Indians (83-56, 47-27 away) @ Chicago White Sox (54-84, 32-38 home)
Where: Guaranteed Rate Field, Chicago, IL
When: Friday, September 8, 10.10am (AET)
Starters: Corey Kluber (CLE, 14-4, 2.56 ERA), Carlos Rodon (CHW, 2-5, 4.15 ERA)
Prices: Cleveland $1.38, Chicago $3.36, O/U 7.5

Confirmed bet: Cleveland -1.5 (three units @ $1.71)

TIW says: We’ve ridden the Indians to almost nine units of profit in the past fortnight and see no reason to dismount this cash cow in this series finale against the Chicago White Sox. Corey Kluber enters this match-up with an American League-leading 2.56 ERA and the league’s lowest opposition batting average (.194). Kluber also ranks in the top five in other pitching categories for the defending AL champions, who own the league’s second-best record behind the Houston Astros. Kluber was named AL Pitcher of the Month for August after going 5-1 with a 1.96 ERA in six starts.

He also has won seven of his past eight decisions, and five successive decisions on the road dating back to a June 1 return from the disabled list. In 18 career appearances (17 starts) against the White Sox, Kluber is 8-4 with a 3.28 ERA. He has faced Chicago three times this season, going 2-0 with a 2.95 ERA, including a complete-game shutout on April 21 at Guaranteed Rate Field as he gave up just three hits, walked two and struck out nine. It’s not a one-man show by any stretch. Carlos Santana went 3-for-4 with a two-run homer in yesterday’s win and is 7-for-11 with two homers over his past three games.

Edwin Encarnacion has registered four two-hit performances while going 11-for-27 with two homers during his seven-game hitting streak. The Indians matched their record 14-game winning streak with a 5-1 victory over the White Sox yesterday. They set that mark just last year on the way to the American League pennant and a seven-game loss to the Chicago Cubs in the World Series. The longest regular-season winning streak without a tie in major league history is 21, last achieved by the 1935 Chicago Cubs. The White Sox (54-84) will send left-hander Carlos Rodon (2-5, 4.15 ERA) out for his 13th start since returning from the 60-day disabled list on June 28.

Rodon has struck out 10 or more batters three times this year and has registered a total of 76 in 69 1/3 innings. Rodon settled for a no-decision against Cleveland when he allowed one run and six hits with nine strikeouts in 6 2/3 innings on July 30 and is a solid 4-1 with a 2.34 ERA in 10 career appearances (nine starts) versus the Indians. The White Sox have lost seven of their past nine to fall 30 games below .500. Adam Engel homered in the ninth inning for Chicago’s lone run, just his sixth hit in 71 at-bats over his last 24 contests.
