Gunners fire in EPL season opener: The Inside Mail’s for August 12

Updated: August 11, 2017

A feast of goals opened the Premier League season when Arsenal twice came from behind to beat Leicester City 4-3. Olivier Giroud headed home the late winner in this rare Friday night match-up. Arsenal’s new signing Alexandre Lacazette (pictured below) took just 94 seconds to make his mark with a header from Mohamed Elneny’s curling cross to equal the record for the fastest opening goal in a Premier League season. Today’s early game features Watford and Liverpool before an afternoon feast featuring Chelsea v Burnley, Crystal Palace v Huddersfield Town, Everton v Stoke City, Southampton v Swansea City and West Bromwich Albion v Bournemouth before Manchester City head to promoted Brighton & Hove Albion to complete the day’s card. Sunday’s schedule comprises two games – Newcastle United v Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United v West Ham United. Our selections for tonight’s games will be listed below later today.

MLB betting (August 12)

Not since June 2011 have the Pirates and Blue Jays squared off at the Rogers Centre, but they’ll meet there to open a three-game series tonight. The Toronto Blue Jays defeated the New York Yankees 4-0 last night. They are last in the American League East but are only four games out of the second AL wild-card spot. Pittsburgh have won six of their past eight games. The Pirates are fourth in the National League Central, but they are just three games out of first place. We’re keen on Marcus Stroman on his home mound in this spot; overall record: 231-13-209, +33.31 units

CFL betting (week 8, August 12)

The Toronto Argonauts and Montreal Alouettes begin a crucial home-and-home series at Percival Molson Stadium on Friday night. The Als only trail the Argos by two points for top spot in the East, setting up a showdown for first place in the division. Toronto QB Ricky Ray will miss this game due to a shoulder injury so former Hamilton Tiger-Cat Jeff Matthews will take the ball. GM Jim Popp, Head Coach Marc Trestman, receiver S.J. Green, linebacker Bear Woods and defensive linemen Jeffrey Finley and Alan-Michael Cash are facing their former team for the first time but we’re not expecting that to be much help for the Argos. The Montreal Alouettes are coming off their bye week with a bitter taste in their mouths after giving up a 12-point lead with less than two minutes to go against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers back in week 6. We think that result will be the motivation for a steelier effort from the Alouettes in this tricky divisional spot; overall record: 12-10, +0.63 units

CFL week 8: Toronto Argonauts (3-0-4, 1-0-2 away) @ Montreal Alouettes (2-0-4, 2-0-1 home)
Where: Percival Molson Memorial Stadium, Montreal, QC, Canada
When: Saturday, August 12, 9.30am (AET)
Lines: Montreal -9, O/U 47.5
Confirmed bet: -47.5/total (three units @ $1.94)

Week 8 results update: 0-1, -2.0 units

Edmonton Eskimos @ Ottawa Redblacks WIN (two units @ $2.05) LOSE (27-20)

AFL betting (round 21, August 12)

With no Joel Selwood, Tom Hawkins or Mitch Duncan, today’s clash against Richmond at Simonds Stadium will be an enormous test for Geelong, who welcome back Patrick Dangerfield. Richmond are in season-best form and will be buoyed by the return of Jack Riewoldt from eye surgery. It’s not exactly do or die for the Cats but, if they drop a second-straight game, a home final becomes much harder to secure. Geelong have won a staggering 12 in a row over the Tigers dating back more than a decade, but this looks the day for yellow and black to salute; overall record: 66-4-46, +41.51 units

Confirmed bets

Geelong v Richmond -160.5 (two units @ $1.90)
Brisbane v Gold Coast +202.5 (three units @ $1.88)
Essendon v Adelaide -28.5 (one unit @ $1.92)

Round 21 results update: 1-0-0, +0.92 units

Three-unit bets: 17-1-6, +27.81 units
Two-unit bets: 21-2-15, +11.24 units
One-unit bets: 28-1-25, +2.46 units

Western Bulldogs v GWS Giants -5.5 (one unit @ $1.92) WIN (57-105)

EPL betting (August 12)

Watford head into their Premier League opener against Liverpool with grand ambitions after adding a new manager and big summer signings. Hornets coach Marco Silva has bolstered his strike force with Richarlison and Andre Gray this week, joining Tom Cleverley, Nathaniel Chalobah, Kiko Femenia, Will Hughes and Daniel Bachmann at Vicarage Road. Silva and his side face a real test against Liverpool, with Jurgen Klopp’s men aiming to mount a credible title challenge despite Philippe Coutinho having handed in a transfer request. Liverpool showed they were among the best sides in the country last season. Where they came unstuck was in games against teams who wanted to sit back and hit them on the counter-attack. Watford will follow that plan here, and we expect a high scoring affair as a result.

Watford v Liverpool +2.5/total (two units @ $1.90)
Everton WIN v Stoke City (one unit @ $1.82)
Chelsea -1.5/AH v Burnley (one unit @ $1.85)
Crystal Palace v Huddersfield Town +0.5/AH (one unit @ $2.10)

Today’s other games

Southampton v Swansea City
West Bromwich Albion v Bournemouth
Brighton & Hove Albion v Manchester City
