“That’s my wish, Ray Kinsella”: The Inside Word’s mail for August 25

Updated: August 24, 2017

Archibald Wright “Moonlight” Graham, who died on this day (August 25) in 1965, was a baseball player, then doctor, who appeared as a right fielder in a single major league game for the New York Giants on June 29, 1905. His story was popularised by Shoeless Joe, a novel by W. P. Kinsella, and the subsequent 1989 film Field of Dreams, starring Kevin Costner, and featuring Burt Lancaster (pictured below, right) and Frank Whaley, respectively, as older and younger incarnations of Graham. He joined on May 23, 1905. On June 29, the Giants were the visiting team against the Brooklyn Superbas (now the LA Dodgers) at Washington Park. At the conclusion of the eighth inning, Graham replaced right fielder George Browne. In the top of the ninth inning, Graham was on deck when Claude Elliott flied out, resulting in the third and final out. Graham played the bottom of the ninth in right field, never having the ball hit in his direction. That game turned out to be his only appearance in the major leagues.

MLB betting (August 25)

Chris Sale is yet to lose back-to-back starts in 2017 and he’ll need to knock over the team that was responsible for his worst outing of the season to maintain that streak. Sale looks to atone for a rocky performance versus Cleveland on August 1 when he takes the mound for the Boston Red Sox in this finale of a four-game set against the host Indians. Cleveland will look to right-hander Trevor Bauer for a solid outing to help a patchwork line-up, minus four injured starters, that managed only three hits in yesterday’s 6-1 setback; overall record: 255-14-228, +35.18 units

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers travel to Percival Molson Stadium for a Thursday night matchup with the Montreal Alouettes to kick off week 10 in the CFL. At nearly the midway point of the season, the Bombers have emerged as a threat in the West Division and appear to be serious Grey Cup contenders. The 33-26 victory was also the fourth straight win for the Bombers, putting them in a tie with the Calgary Stampeders for second in the West. In contrast, the Montreal Alouettes’ offence couldn’t find any momentum last week against the Toronto Argonauts, falling 38-6 in a battle between the best in the East Division; overall record: 14-1-10, +4.67 units
