TIW says: Seattle left-hander James Paxton tonight aims for his eighth victory in as many starts when the Mariners play host to the Los Angeles Angels in the opener of a four-game series at Safeco Field. Paxton (12-3, 2.70 ERA) was named the American League’s Pitcher of the Month for July after going 6-0. He was the first pitcher in franchise history to win six games in a month. Paxton (pictured below) has compiled a 1.59 ERA during the seven-start winning streak. He has been especially good over his past five outings during which he’s struck out 41 and issued just two walks.

The 28-year-old has been strong at home, going 7-2 with a 2.15 ERA and 1.10 WHIP in 11 outings. He is 1-0 with a 1.54 ERA in two starts against the Angels this season and is 4-2 with a 2.04 ERA in nine career match-ups. Paxton looks to provide another boost for the Mariners, who have won eight of their past 11 contests to lead Kansas City and Tampa Bay by one game for the AL’s second wild-card spot. Seattle concluded a 6-3 trip with a 6-3 victory yesterday in Oakland. Nelson Cruz hit two home runs and had three RBI and Kyle Seager added a three-run shot.

The Angels (57-58) capped a 6-3 homestand with a 5-1 victory Wednesday against Baltimore, moving past the Orioles in the playoff chase. First baseman C.J. Cron homered among three hits on Wednesday and is 7-for-15 with five RBIs over the past four games. The Angels, who are two games behind the Mariners, are scheduled to send left-hander Tyler Skaggs (1-2, 4.32 ERA) to the mound. Skaggs is 1-2 with a 5.72 ERA in five career starts against Seattle and has struggled with Robinson Cano (6-for-12) and Kyle Seager (6-for-13, one homer). Albert Pujols is 5-for-24 against the Canadian left-hander with two doubles and two homers.

Pujols is the only current Angel to take Paxton deep. In his first start Saturday since coming off the disabled list, Skaggs allowed three runs on six hits in four innings of a 5-0 loss to Oakland. Skaggs had been out since late April with a strained oblique. Los Angeles star center fielder Mike Trout regularly endures difficulties against Paxton and is a meagre 3-for-22 with 11 strikeouts versus the left-hander. The Mariners have won four of their past five over the Angels after Los Angeles had taken the previous four. Sox of the past eight played ‘over’ the total although the past two have gone ‘under’.
