MLB betting (August 9): White Sox slump shows few signs of ending

Updated: August 8, 2017

There haven’t been many fireworks for the White Sox since July 4, with the team posting a 4-23 record that ranks as the worst in Major League Baseball. Every other team has at least 10 wins during that time. And while the White Sox are back home to begin a six-game homestand at Guaranteed Rate Field, they’ll be facing a Houston team with the American League’s best record and ace Dallas Keuchel, who is 9-1 with a 2.15 ERA; overall record: 221-13-199, +33.35 units

MLB best of the day: Houston Astros (71-40, 38-15 away) @ Chicago White Sox (41-68, 21-29 home)
Where: Guaranteed Rate Field, Chicago, IL (pictured below)
When: Wednesday, August 9, 10.10am (AET)
Starters: Dallas Keuchel (HOU, 9-1, 2.15 ERA), Derek Holland (CHW, 5-11, 5.27 ERA)
Prices: Houston $1.41, Chicago $3.23, O/U 10

Confirmed bet: Houston -1.5 (two units @ $1.69)

TIW says: The Houston Astros hope to build upon the best record in the American League when they visit the Chicago White Sox to open a three-game series tonight. Houston are coming off a series victory over the Toronto Blue Jays and boasts a major-league-best 38-15 record on the road. The Astros have scored more runs (656) and hit more home runs (182) than any other team in baseball this season. Left-hander Dallas Keuchel will try to notch his 10th victory in his 14th start of the season. Keuchel, who has reached double-digit victories on two occasions (2014, 2015), also is going for his 60th career win.

However, the 2015 AL Cy Young Award winner has made two lacklustre starts since returning following an eight-week absence with a pinched nerve in his neck. Keuchel surrendered a homer and allowed three runs total in his second successive start on Wednesday, as he worked five innings in a 3-0 setback to Tampa Bay. The 29-year-old struck out a season-low two batters. Alex Bregman ripped a tying two-run triple and scored on an RBI single from Juan Centeno to cap a wild four-run rally in the ninth inning of Houston’s 7-6 victory over Toronto on Sunday. The Astros might welcome back injured outfielder George Springer, who has been on the 10-day disabled list because of discomfort in his left quadriceps.

Bregman has three homers among his eight extra-base hits, 10 RBIs and eight runs scored during his nine-game hitting streak, although he just 1-for-6 against the tonight’s starter for the White Sox, Derek Holland. He is 0-5 in his past nine outings since recording his last win on June 13. The 30-year-old has conceded 50 earned runs and 18 homers in his past 11 starts (51 2/3 innings), and is coming off a three-pitch relief appearance at Boston on Saturday. Holland owns a 5-3 mark with a 4.50 ERA in 13 career starts against the Astros (mostly with the Rangers), although he is 0-2 with a 6.67 ERA in five starts at Minute Maid Park.

The White Sox have dropped six in a row and 23 of 27 contests since July 4 to plummet into the basement of the AL. Chicago could receive a much-needed jolt in the opener of this six-game homestand with the possible return of Avisail Garcia, who has missed 12 games with a strained right thumb. The White Sox may also have the use of third baseman/designated hitter Matt Davidson, who leads the team with 22 home runs. He has missed five games in a row due to a bruised right wrist that he sustained when he was hit by a pitch from Blue Jays right-hander Marcus Stroman.
