CONCACAF Gold Cup betting: Costa Rica, Canada in Group A driving seat

Updated: July 11, 2017

The two elements that characterise Houston’s weather in summer – heat and humidity – will be out in force for the opening games in the second round of the CONCACAF Gold Cup group stage tonight where Costa Rica and Honduras will start odds-on favourites to defeat Canada and French Guiana respectively; overall record: 2-1, +2.35 units

CONCACAF Gold Cup Group A: Costa Rica (1-0-0, 3pts) v Canada (1-0-0, 3pts)
Where: BBVA Compass Stadium, Houston, TX, USA
When: Wednesday, July 12, 9.30am (AET)
Prices: Costa Rica $1.70, Canada $6.00, DRAW $3.30

Confirmed bet: Costa Rica WIN (three units @ $1.70)

TIW says: Canada currently lead a Gold Cup group for the first time since 2009, thanks to a 4-2 tournament opening win over French Guiana, a brace from emerging teenage star Alphonso Davies (pictured below), and a superior +2 goal difference. Even a draw would likely seal Canada’s first passage out of the group since the 2009 tournament. Lose, and they may need a victory against the same Honduras side that knocked the Canucks out at the quarter-final stage eight years ago. Canada had never previously scored four goals in a single Gold Cup match and had scored three times only twice in tournament history.

The Ticos will still be riding their own sense of accomplishment after Marco Urena scored the winner in Costa Rica’s first-ever Gold Cup victory over Honduras. Perhaps none of CONCACAF’s big boys are taking the tournament more seriously than Costa Rica, who’ve included the likes of Bryan Ruiz and Joel Campbell. However, the Ticos may have to alter their approach in this game after Minnesota United forward Johan Venegas left their Gold Cup opener with an injury. The key here is Canada’s ability to defend after French Guiana made things scary by scoring twice in two minutes in the second half of their opening group game.

CONCACAF Gold Cup Group A: Honduras (0-0-1, 0pts) v French Guiana (0-0-1, 0pts)
Where: BBVA Compass Stadium, Houston, TX, USA
When: Sunday, July 9, 12pm (AET)
Prices: Honduras $1.40, French Guiana $7.50, DRAW $4.75

Confirmed bet: Honduras -1/hcp (two units @ $2.00)

TIW says: If Honduras are going to climb back into knockout-round contention, this would seem an ideal opportunity. Los Catrachos, coming off a 1-0 loss to Group A favourites Costa Rica, have a chance at redemption when they take on underdogs French Guiana. This will feel like a genuine home fixture for midfielder Boniek Garcia and forwards Alberth Elis and Romell Quioto, who ply their trade in the MLS with a Houston Dynamo side that is yet to lose at home in league play this season. Honduras did everything but score against Costa Rica so they’ll be hoping that Elis and Quioto are on target here.

Quioto has five goals and Elis has four in international play. The Gold Cup newcomers French Guiana, who are members of CONCACAF but not full FIFA members, fell 4-2 to Canada in their first-ever match in the regional tournament. Les Yana Dokos have met Honduras twice before, and gave Los Catrachos a scare in that two-legged series before losing 4-3 on aggregate in a qualifying playoff for the 2015 Gold Cup. French Guiana also boast a handful of players who have experience in France’s Ligue 1 – including Guingamp forward Sloan Privat, whose seven international goals include one against Canada.
