CONCACAF Gold Cup betting: Mexico at home in Denver’s mile high air

Updated: July 13, 2017

The high humidity of the past two days gives way to warm but otherwise perfect conditions in the altitude of Denver for today’s action in the CONCACAF Gold Cup. Group C teams take the spotlight here with victory virtually assuring Mexico or Jamaica qualification for the next round in the second match-up of the evening; overall record: 3-4, -3.35 units

CONCACAF Gold Cup Group C: El Salvador (0-0-1, 0pts) v Curaçao (0-0-1, 0pts)
Where: Sports Authority Field at Mile High, Denver, CO, USA
When: Friday, July 14, 10am (AET)
Prices: El Salvador $2.15, Curaçao $3.50, DRAW $3.25

Confirmed bet: +2.5/total (one unit @ $2.30)

TIW says: Boy, match-ups don’t come much more obscure than this one! That said, this could well turn out to be a highly entertaining affair as the minnows of Curaçao (admittedly ranked 68th in the world) take on the Los Cuscatlecos of El Salvador. Curaçao seriously tested Jamaica’s goalkeeper Andre Blake in their 2-0 loss to the Reggae Boyz in their tournament opener. This time around, against a team that does not feature the reigning MLS Goalkeeper of the Year, Curaçao’s forwards will fancy their chances of netting the first Gold Cup tally in their country’s history. Star defender Cuco Martina and forward Felitciano Zschusschen have left the squad to chase club moves in an untimely development for Remko Bicentini’s aspirations.

El Salvador remain on the road to recovery from a match-fixing scandal that rocked the nation in 2013. Though the dust has started to settle, and some players involved in the scandal have returned to the fold, the incident still looms large over the team, who are working to win back the trust and support of their fans. Another defeat will elevate El Salvador’s Gold Cup winless streak to a team-record six games. Making matters even more challenging, they have failed to score more than one goal in seven successive outings, including their opening 3-1 defeat at the hands of regional giants Mexico.

CONCACAF Gold Cup Group C: Mexico (1-0-0, 3pts) v Jamaica (1-0-0, 3pts)
Where: Sports Authority Field at Mile High, Denver, CO, USA
When: Friday, July 14, 12pm (AET)
Prices: Mexico $1.40, Jamaica $8.00, DRAW $4.40

Confirmed bet: Mexico -1/hcp (one unit @ $2.10)

TIW says: The early frontrunners in Group C meet in a rematch of the 2015 edition’s championship final that constitutes one of the most anticipated match-ups of this year’s group stage. Both El Tri and the Reggae Boyz won their opening matches in San Diego on Sunday, setting up their head-to-head meeting as a likely battle for first place, the reward for which is a quarterfinal match-up with a third-place team from one of the other groups at the University of Phoenix Stadium in Arizona on July 20. As is almost always the case for Mexico in this event, a strongly partisan pro-El Tri crowd is expected at the home of the Denver Broncos, further bolstering their status as heavy favourites against the islanders.

Mexico powered past El Salvador in a 3-1 victory that underlined their credentials. Morelia winger Elias Hernandez scored one goal and assisted on the other two, including a pinpoint set-piece delivery to the head of Hedgardo Marin to open the scoring. Head coach Juan Carlos Osorio (pictured above) watched from the suite level as he started the six-game suspension handed down by FIFA for his misbehaviour during the Confederations Cup. Jamaica are unbeaten in nine of their past 11 Gold Cup matches. Their only losses over that stretch have been to the United States and Mexico – the Reggae Boyz are 0W 0D 6L against Mexico in Gold Cup play.
