CFL week 3 betting (July 7): Als out to continue perfect start for underdogs

Updated: July 6, 2017

Montreal’s offence has been problematic in the early going but the defence, as per usual, hasn’t been an issue. The Als have given up a CFL-best 39 points through two games. Montreal is also the only team that has not given up a sack through two weeks. We’re expecting a low scoring affair as the Alouettes (three-point underdogs) host the BC Lions (who didn’t travel home after playing Toronto last week) in the opening game of week 3 in the CFL; overall record: 4-2, +0.54 units

CFL week 3: BC Lions @ Montreal Alouettes
Where: Percival Molson Memorial Stadium, Montreal, QC, Canada
When: Friday, July 7, 9.30am (AET)
Lines: BC Lions -3, 50.5/total
Confirmed bet: -50.5 (one unit @ $1.93)

TIW says: Those of you who mock our (betting) passion for Canadian football should take note of this little gem. After week 2 in the CFL, the underdogs are a perfect 8-0 against the spread. That makes it the third year in a row that underdogs went a perfect 4-0 ATS in the first week of the CFL season. In 2015, underdogs started the year a perfect 8-0 ATS (the same as this season) and were 11-2-1 ATS (84.6 per cent) after the season’s first four weeks. Last season, teams getting the points went 11-4-1 ATS in weeks 1-4. That means over the past two-plus years, underdogs are a staggering 30-6-2 ATS in the first four weeks of the season. That equates to an 83.3 per cent cash rate!

In tonight’s week 3 opener, it’s the Alouettes who’ll start outsiders as the BC Lions aim for a fourth successive win against Montreal. The Lions continue their Eastern Division road trip with their second cross country rival in as many weeks. BC scored two TDs in the fourth quarter to surge past the Toronto Argonauts 28-15 in week 2. It was a low scoring affair heading into the final 15 minutes with the Argos up 10-9, but that Lions scored 18 unanswered points to pull away from the Double Blue late in the game. The Lions have a history of dominating East Division opponents, winning seven of eight games versus cross division foes last season. Their trip east finishes with a visit to Hamilton in week 4.

While both teams are 1-1, the moods are a little different heading into Thursday night’s clash in Montreal. The Lions are coming off a key road win while the Alouettes lost a defensive slugfest to Edmonton — a game that was in doubt right up to the final whistle. Montreal blanked Edmonton in the first quarter to build up a 10-point lead, but the Esks slowly clawed back into the game and outscored the Als 17-6 in the second half. Darian Durant was contained to only 166 passing yards, one touchdown and an interception while Tyrell Sutton (pictured above) rushed for 88 yards on 12 carries. On the bright side, the Alouettes kept a clean pocket for Durant, who is the only quarterback in the CFL yet to take a sack this season.
