Toasting the ultimate F1 playboy driver: The Inside Word’s mail for June 16

Updated: June 15, 2017

James Hunt, who died on June 15, 1993 is the epitome of a man who left nothing in the tank when he departed this mortal coil. Hunt made his Formula 1 debut in 1973 and quickly developed a fierce rivalry with Austrian driver Niki Lauda. The Englishman won the World Driver’s Championship in 1976 after Lauda was sidelined due to a near-fatal accident at the Nürburgring. Famed for his playboy lifestyle and hard-partying ways, he quit the sport midway through the 1979 and soon entered a new career as the colour man alongside famed F1 commentator Murray Walker. Two days after calling the 1993 Canadian GP, he suffered a fatal heart attack, aged just 45.

The slumping San Francisco Giants, who tumbled into last place in the National League West with their latest loss to the Royals, make an ill-timed visit to Coors Field when they open a four-game series against the Colorado Rockies. Colorado won three of four from April 3 to April 16 at Coors Field and swept three games from the Giants at AT&T Park from April 21-23, outscoring them 26-8 in that series. Racing preview (June 16)

Royal Ascot’s failure to attract a single runner from Australia this year is down to sheer bad luck, according to Ascot’s director of racing Nick Smith, who pledged to step up efforts to secure a top name like Winx for next year’s meeting. Since Choisir pulled off the King’s Stand and Diamond Jubilee Stakes double in 2003 the royal meeting has entertained a host of leading horses and their connections from Australia along with the USA, Japan, Hong Kong and South Africa. Smith met Winx’’ trainer Chris Waller at the Kentucky Derby who he said remains “extremely positive” about taking the record-breaking mare to the UK next year; overall record (WIN-PLACE-UNPLACED): 622-79-1000, +238.58 units

AFL round 13 betting (June 16)

North Melbourne and St Kilda have fallen off the pace in recent weeks making tonight’s round 13 clash at Etihad Stadium pivotal for both sides. St Kilda have been in freefall and are down to 12th on the ladder following three successive defeats – they failed to score more than 68 points in those three losses to Sydney, the Bulldogs and Adelaide. North have won the past six matches over St Kilda with five of those by margins of 23 or greater; overall record: 48-4-30, +25.13 units

NRL round 15 betting (June 16)

Hampered by a ridiculously long injury list, the Gold Coast Titans head to Sydney to face the Rabbitohs at ANZ Stadium tonight. South Sydney’s direct, power-packed approach threatened to upset the Broncos last week and if Tom and George Burgess can provide a similar platform on Friday night there’s no way the Titans will be able to quell their momentum here. The Titans won a thriller 29-28 in Perth last season over the Rabbitohs and have a great record ATS as an interstate outsider of six or more point but it’s hard to envisage even the Bunnies stuffing this one up.

NRL round 15: South Sydney Rabbitohs (4-9) v Gold Coast Titans (4-9)
Where: ANZ Stadium, Sydney Olympic Park, NSW
When: Friday, June 16, 7.50pm (AET)
