To protect and (hold) serve: The Inside Word’s mail for June 4

Updated: June 3, 2017

Margaret Court has been in the news over the past week after sharing her views on same sex marriage, and she’s not the only tennis champion to enter the church at career’s end. Andrea Jaeger turned professional when aged just 15, reaching the singles final at Roland Garros just two years later and Wimbledon as an 18-year-old. Her career ended prematurely due to shoulder injuries after winning 10 singles titles. After retirement in 1987, she dedicated her life to public service, charities, and philanthropy. In 2006, she became “Sister Andrea” as a member of the Anglican Order of Preachers. Jaeger was born on this day, June 5, in 1965 and turns 52 today.

AFL betting (round 11, June 4)

The Dockers took a giant step backwards last weekend when they were belted by 100 points in Adelaide – the first triple-figure defeat of Ross Lyon’s long coaching career. This shapes as a genuine toss of the coin encounter. The Magpies will need to restructure their forward line to cope with the absence of Alex Fasolo, who is taking an indefinite break to deal with mental health issues. Freo have coughed up some big scores this season but not so much at home while the ‘under’ is 20-8 in Collingwood interstate games dating to 2012; overall record: 43-4-28, +22.64 units

NHL Stanley Cup Final (June 4)

The Penguins will look to take a commanding 3-0 series in Game 3 Saturday night, but they’ll have to contend with a rowdy Nashville crowd as the Predators host their first Stanley Cup final game in franchise history. Returning home for Game 3 has been a recipe for success in the past, when falling behind two games to none in the Stanley Cup playoffs. Since 2003, there have been nine times in which teams that have had to come home trailing in the Stanley Cup final down 2-0 and those teams are an impressive 8-1 (88.9 per cent) in the following Game 3s; playoff record: 15-8-21, +0.16 units; overall record: 251-29-205, +57.34 units
