Racing preview (May 13): Brisbane, welcome to the (Russian) Revolution

Updated: May 12, 2017

Adelaide and Brisbane share the racing spotlight today with G1 action at Morphettville (the $600,000 UBET South Australian Derby) and Doomben (the $700,000 James Boag’s Premium Doomben 10,000) highlighting packed programs at both venues. It’s also a big day for provincial racing in NSW with stand-alone Saturday action at Scone for the $400,000 Inglis 3YO Guineas and $200,000 Emirates Park Dark Jewel Classic; overall record (WIN-PLACE-UNPLACED): 568-77-904, +209.18 units

Doomben R7 (4.04pm) G1 $700,000 James Boag’s Premium Doomben 10,000 (1200m, standard weight for age)

A race that was first run in 1933, its iconic name was bestowed in 1947 after the prizemoney was elevated to ₤10,000 which, at the time, was the richest sprint in Australia. Chief De Beers (1995, 1998), Falvelon (2001-02), Prince Triala (1990-91) and Black Onyx (1969-70) won this race on multiple occasions while Bernborough, Manikato, Apache Cat and Takeover Target occupy a spot on an impressive honour roll. Notably, the distance of six furlongs (1200m) was increased to 1350m in 1973 but the race has been reduced to 1200m this year. Since 2000 there has been just one winner from a double-digit gate (Mr Innocent from gate 12 in 2000).

In the past 34 years, 29 winners have jumped from a single-digit gate. Fillies and mares hadn’t the greatest record with just four successful in the past 30 years however three of those four have emerged victorious in the past seven years. The Doomben 10,000 is now the first G1 race of the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival after being moved forward a fortnight. It’s now a nice lead-up to the Group 1 BTC Cup (1300m). He’s getting into a good thing’s price but we can’t go past #12 Russian Revolution. The 3yo colt has enjoyed a nicely spaced autumn prep which has been highlighted by his win in the G1 Galaxy. A winner of five from seven starts, he’ll be camped just off the speed, loves a bit of give in the ground and trialled successfully before heading north.

Morphettville R7 (4.55pm) G1 $600,000 UBET South Australian Derby (2500m, set weights, 3yo)

Not many races pre-date the Melbourne Cup, but that’s the case with the South Australian Derby. First run in 1860 at Thebarton Racecourse, the race was granted G1 status in 1984 and has since been won by Shivas Revenge, Subzero, Mummify, Zarita and Rebel Raider (also successful in the VRC Derby). For this year’s race, ballot exemptions were offered to the first three placegetters in the Chairman’s Stakes and the Australasian Oaks, along with the winner of the Port Adelaide Guineas. Seven of the past 11 favourites have won the race while Adelaide form has been a key ingredient to the winner’s performance in recent years – seven of the past nine winners had their final lead-in run at Morphettville.

There doesn’t look to be a lot of pace in this race with #1 Ruthven to lead from our two selections #3 Grand Chancellor and #5 Odeon. The Chairman’s Stakes tends to be a better guide here (in contrast to runners sent here as an afterthought from Sydney or Melbourne). He was held up at the wrong time and picked himself up to hit the line solidly for second. But the bulk of our money will be with the Zahra/Ellerton gelding. After winning a Class 1 four starts back, this NZ bred 3yo has progressed to be the favourite for this Group 1 Derby. He was runner-up to Grand Chancellor in the Port Adelaide Guineas, hitting the line strongly as the favourite before a last start 2000m win at Flemington.
