Racing preview (May 19): Preakness dream looks reality for Derby winner

Updated: May 18, 2017

The entrée to another big weekend of Group 1 racing will be served today at Grafton, Wagga, Geelong and Cranbourne while we also look at how Sunday’s (AET) running of the Preakness Stakes is shaping up; overall record (WIN-PLACE-UNPLACED): 570-77-916, +215.18 units

After the front-running style of Always Dreaming proved to be advantageous over the sloppy surface at Churchill Downs, it’s no surprise to see him as favourite for the 142nd running of the Preakness Stakes. The Derby winner, Always Dreaming, will break from the no. 4 gate in the 10-horse field. Thirteen winners have started from that post, most recently Curlin in 2007. Always Dreaming, which has won four races in a row, including the Florida Derby and the Kentucky Derby, is an early 4-5 favourite for the Preakness. Classic Empire, the early second choice at 3-1, will be next to Always Dreaming in gate 5 (more here).

• Five-time Melbourne Cup winning owner Lloyd Williams says he’s delighted to be inducted into the Australian Racing Hall of Fame. Williams, who was announced as an inductee on Wednesday at the Australian Racing Museum, has spent more than 50 years in racing as an owner while also serving time as a committee member of the Victoria Racing Club. His first Melbourne Cup victory came with Just A Dash in 1981 while he claimed his fifth last year with Almandin. Former Perth-based jockey John ‘JJ’ Miller, who retired from riding in 1990, joins the list of jockeys in the Hall Of Fame after a career spanning more than 40 years (more here).

• The emerging training career of Matt Cumani has hit a hurdle with the 36-year-old suspended for the rest of the season and fined $20,000 for failing to notify stewards for almost a month of a strangles infection in his Ballarat stables. Cumani faced the Racing Appeals and Disciplinary Board on Tuesday and pleaded guilty to two charges levelled against him by Racing Victoria stewards. The first was for conduct prejudicial to the image, interests or welfare of racing. The other was for failing to tell RV of the presence of strangles which is classified as a notifiable disease (more here).
