Racing preview (April 6): Classy mare favoured to make it back-to-back Group 1 wins

Randwick track manager Navesh Ramdani is confident that day 2 of The Championships will be run on soft going come Saturday. Blue skies are forecasted are for the reminder of the week, including race day. Meanwhile, there’s a solid card of racing around the country today although the meeting at Coffs Harbour won’t proceed due to the state of the waterlogged track; overall record (WIN-PLACE-UNPLACED): 493-74-793, +189.35 units


After breaking through for a Group 1 win in the William Reid Stakes, Silent Sedition is favourite to snare a second at the elite level. Silent Sedition (pictured above) gave Caulfield trainer Andrew Noblet his first Group 1 victory in the William Reid at Moonee Valley last Friday week when she dropped in distance from 1500m to 1200m. The race was a stepping stone to Saturday’s Group 1 Coolmore Legacy (Queen Of The Turf) Stakes (1600m) at Randwick (more here).

• The second session of the Easter Yearling Sale in Sydney has continued where the first left off with six horses sold for $1 million or more. Yesterday’s results bring the total of million dollar yearlings to 10 with the sale topper so far a colt by Medaglia D’Oro out of stakes winning mare Hoss Amour which fetched $2.4 million. He was bought on Wednesday by a group formed by American concern Stonestreet, Coolmore and the emerging Aquis Farm (more here).

• The world’s richest horse race just got richer, with organisers announcing a USD $16 million (AUD $21.13 million) purse for the 2018 Pegasus World Cup Invitational in Florida. The inaugural race in January was worth $12 million, eclipsing the $10 million on offer at the Dubai World Cup. American colt Arrogate is the reigning champion of both races. He won the Pegasus World Cup at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach on January 28, before taking the Dubai World Cup on March 25 (more here).
