Queen of speed still the fastest female on NASCAR tracks: The Inside Word’s mail for April 20

Updated: April 19, 2017

The historic nature of Danica Patrick’s victory in the Indy Japan 300 on this day (April 20) in 2008 cannot be understated. The race was delayed a day due to water seeping onto the track, leaving the surface ‘green’ and slippery. Patrick started sixth on the grid (according to driver points with qualifying cancelled) at the Twin Ring Motegi. The leaders were forced to pit for fuel late in the race, leaving Patrick to win by more than 5 seconds. With that victory, she joined Shirley Muldowney (NHRA) as the only female winner in the top tier of US motorsports. The 35-year-old, who stands just 157cm and weighs 45kg,  now competes in the Monster Energy NASCAR Series for Stewart/Haas Racing.

Europa League betting for April 20-21

It’s been a week of extraordinary drama for Lyon. Their first-leg clash with Besiktas in France was delayed after fans spilled onto the pitch, supporters clashed and missiles were thrown. When the match began 46 minutes later, Lyon went 1-0 down before salvaging a 2-1 win. Then their players were twice attacked on the pitch by Bastia supporters in Corsica last weekend. The game was officially abandoned at half-time amid disgraceful scenes. NBA betting for April 20

In rolling to a 118-87 win in game 1, the Houston Rockets found ample space to operate and score at the rim, producing 62 points in the paint and 31 second-chance points against the bigger Oklahoma City Thunder forward line. The Thunder pressed the Rocket shooters to the perimeter, limiting Houston to 10-of-33 shooting on three-pointers. The downside was the lay-up lane left wide open. Racing preview for April 20

Racing Queensland has reinstated official trials at Eagle Farm and Doomben in an effort to boost betting turnover and national media coverage. The two major metropolitan tracks have not hosted official trials in more than three years. Instead there have been jump-outs where horse names were not declared and trackwork riders could ride horses at both courses while Deagon, the Sunshine Coast, Gold Coast and Toowoomba had official trials. It led to complaints that trial form was not being exposed from the state’s biggest racing centre; overall record (WIN-PLACE-UNPLACED): 517-75-836, +192.65 units
