Confirmed bet: Capitals WIN NT (one unit @ $1.91)
TIW says: There are a handful of first round series heading for an upset, and the Maple Leafs could add their name to that list tonight. The teams split overtime wins during the first two games in Washington, and the pressure is mounting on the Capitals with the weight of their recent playoff failures. Washington also bears the weight of heavy favouritism over the young Maple Leafs, many of whom have never experienced the playoff hockey before. The Maple Leafs prevailed in the second overtime Saturday on the second goal of the game by right winger Kasperi Kapanen, who was playing his second NHL playoff game. Toronto has trailed for fewer than four minutes in the series.
Maple Leafs goaltender Frederik Andersen made 41 saves in Game 1 and 47 in Game 2. While the complexion of the series changed following the double-overtime victory, the look of Toronto’s back line is far from complete as coach Mike Babcock announced that stay-at-home defenseman Roman Polak will miss the rest of the playoffs after sustaining a lower-body injury in a collision with Washington’s Brooks Orpik. Toronto’s back line has already been compromised with Nikita Zaitsev missing the first two contests of the series due to a suspected concussion. The Capitals are 8-2 in the past 10 meetings with Toronto and bounce back tonight.
Western Conference first round, game 3: Chicago Blackhawks @ Nashville Predators (Nashville lead 2-0)
Where: Bridgestone Arena, Nashville, TN
When: Tuesday, April 18, 11.35am (AET)
Prices: Blackhawks $2.01, Predators $1.90
Confirmed bet: Nashville WIN (one unit @ $1.90)
TIW says: The Nashville Predators have an opportunity to take a 3-0 series lead for the first time ever against the Chicago Blackhawks. The Predators won the first two games at United Center and return to Bridgestone Arena, where they were 24-9-8 during the regular season. The Predators became the fifth NHL team with road shutouts in the first two games of the postseason. In addition to his back-to-back shutouts, Predators goaltender Pekka Rinne became the first goalie with two assists in a playoff game since 2004. Nashville forward Filip Forsberg and defenseman P.K. Subban have combined for three assists in the series but have yet to score on a combined nine shots on goal.
The Blackhawks were 24-13-4 on the road during the regular season and had the most road wins in the Western Conference. The Blackhawks went 2-1-0 at Bridgestone Arena during the regular season and will have to win at least two games on the road this series if they are to advance. The Blackhawks will rely on star players like Jonathan Toews and forward Patrick Kane to pull them out of the hole. Toews and Kane have combined for 14 shots on goal in the series but have yet to score. Chicago are 0-4 in their past four games following a loss of three or more goals although the road team are 4-1 in the past five meetings.
