Racing preview (March 15): Houtzen’s barrier misfortune continues with Slipper draw

Updated: March 14, 2017

Today’s line-up of race meetings has been reduced by one with the abandonment of today’s Provincial Championship heat at Gosford due to the state of the track. That race will now be run at Rosehill on Saturday as part of the Golden Slipper program; overall record (WIN-PLACE- UNPLACED): 454-68-740, +153.8 units

Toby Edmonds is resigned to the filly once again leading the field from gate 16 of 19 in her most important race so far, Saturday’s $3.5 million Golden Slipper at Rosehill. The unbeaten Houtzen (pictured above) crossed from the outside gate in the 16-horse Magic Millions field in January and led from barrier nine of nine in her lead-up race at Eagle Farm last Saturday week (more here).

• Trainer Nicky Henderson has won a record sixth Champion Hurdle, the feature race on the opening day of the Cheltenham Festival. Buveur D’Air, ridden by Noel Fehily, beat his stablemate My Tent Or Yours who ran second in the race for the third time. The two horses are owned by J.P. McManus. Henderson said the 4-1 winner had been steeplechasing this year (more here).

• The Provincial Championships heat set down for Gosford will be added to the Golden Slipper meeting at Rosehill. Racing NSW considered transferring Wednesday’s $150,000 race to Newcastle on Friday or Wyong on Sunday. But to ensure the full field that was declared for the 1200m-race remains intact it will be run at Rosehill. Rain is predicted to continue in NSW for the rest of the week (more here).
