FA Cup round 4 betting: Citizens to show little mercy to Palace

Updated: January 28, 2017

FA Cup round 4 action continues tonight with two all-EPL match-ups scheduled – Manchester City shouldn’t have any issues at Selhurst Park against Crystal Palace but Arsenal face a very tricky trip to Southampton.

Having written off the FA Cup as an unwelcome distraction prior to their third-round clash, Crystal Palace manager Sam Allardyce may now be hoping it provides a tonic to soothe frustrated fans and a pick-me-up for their beleaguered players. Palace host Manchester City today in one of two all Premier League fourth round ties, with Arsenal’s match against Southampton the other highlight of the weekend fixture list.

On paper, a City side that swept aside West Ham United 5-0 in the previous round, are one of the last teams Allardyce would have wanted to face as he tries haul his side out of their current malaise. Yet Pep Guardiola’s City have endured their own difficulties of late and a 4-0 league defeat to Everton at Goodison Park two weeks ago would have given Palace cause for optimism.

Should Palace lose, it will be their fifth defeat in eight matches since Allardyce replaced Alan Pardew in December. Victory, however, could give them a platform from which to build as they look to pull clear of the Premier League relegation zone. While Guardiola (pictured below) has not quite lived up to the impact City created when they won their first 10 matches after his arrival in the off-season, there have been flashes of the brilliance. In the last round, City fielded a strong team and swept aside West Ham 5-0.

The early rounds of the FA Cup are seemingly treated by some Premier League managers as an inconvenient interruption in the fixture list and little more than an exercise in squad rotation. Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is expected to ring the changes again when his side face Southampton with media reports saying striker Alexis Sanchez could be rested while Danny Welbeck is in contention to make his first start of the season.

Wenger will be absent from the touchline after being charged with misconduct after appearing to push the fourth official during a Premier League match against Burnley on Sunday.  Liverpool, who were knocked out of the League Cup in the semi-final by Southampton on Wednesday, take on second tier Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday when Premier League leaders Chelsea host Brentford. Holders Manchester United are at home to second tier Wigan Athletic on Sunday.

Confirmed betting (card finalised)

Best of the day – Liverpool v Wolverhampton Wanderers +2/hcp (two units @ $1.95): It has been a forgetable week for Liverpool after a hugely damaging League defeat and their League Cup semi-final exit. Jurgen Klopp’s side suffered a shock 3-2 home loss to Swansea last weekend to slip 10 points behind Chelsea. Their misery was compounded on Wednesday after a 1-0 home defeat to Southampton as they missed out on a place at Wembley in the League Cup final. Paul Lambert’s Wolves side will be eyeing another FA Cup scalp after dumping EPL side Stoke City out in the last round. Their win has underlined the progress made under Lambert since replacing Walter Zenga two months ago. The Reds to win at $1.34 looks madness, while the handicap price is highly attractive.

Burnley WIN v Bristol City (two units @ $1.66)
Blackburn Rovers v Blackpool +2.5/total (two units @ $1.70)
Southampton DNB v Arsenal (one unit @ $2.30)
Crystal Palace v Manchester City -1/hcp (one unit @ $2.15)
Middlesbrough WIN (to nil) v Accrington Stanley (one unit @ $2.05)
