EPL betting: Mourinho, Guardiola renew hostilities in Manchester derby

Updated: September 10, 2016

EPL featured betting preview: Manchester United (3-0-0, 9 pts) v Manchester City (3-0-0, 9 pts), Old Trafford, Manchester, England; Saturday, September 10, 9.30pm – latest EPL standings here

There are eight EPL games scheduled for today but there’s really only one as Jose Mourinho and Pep Guardiola take their respective Manchester clubs into the 172nd edition of one of the world’s most famous derby contests. The only certainty is that the 100 per cent record of one or both sides will end with with both United and City opening their respective campaigns with three wins. Guardiola is the first Manchester City manager to win his opening five matches in charge of the club. However, he’ll be without the services of striker Sergio Aguero who starts a three-game ban but Bacary Sagna should be in contention after recovering from a hamstring injury.

Leroy Sane and Ilkay Gundogan are now fit and may make their debuts, as could goalkeeper Claudio Bravo. Captain Vincent Kompany is back in full training following a thigh problem but the club will not rush the injury-plagued defender back to action. Aguero has scored seven goals in eight league games against United. Raheem Sterling has scored or assisted five goals in four games under Guardiola – as many as he produced in his past 22 appearances under Manuel Pellegrini. Kevin de Bruyne has provided 15 assists in league and cup since debuting for City, five more than any other player at the club.

Meanwhile Mourinho (who is the first manager to win his opening four games in charge of Manchester United) could field his strongest XI with Luke Shaw and Henrikh Mkhitaryan overcoming minor injuries and Antonio Valencia available after international duty. After losing four Manchester derbies in a row in the league, Manchester United are unbeaten in their last three against City (W2, D1). They kept clean sheets in both meetings last season. The Red Devils have lost three of the past five league derbies at Old Trafford (W1, D1) – that’s more defeats than in the previous 29 (W15, D12, L2).

Mourinho has won three of his 16 competitive meetings with Guardiola (D6, L7), including just one league victory (with Real Madrid against Barcelona in 2012). Wayne Rooney has scored 11 goals in Manchester derbies – more than any other player in this fixture. Zlatan Ibrahimovic (pictured above) has scored 41 times in 34 league games since the start of last season. Marcus Rashford scored the winner in the Manchester derby back in March, becoming the youngest player to score in a Premier League Manchester derby (18y 141d). The bookies look to have this one about right with United at $2.50 to win, City at $3.30 and the draw $3.10. This early in the campaign, the stalemate looks a logical option.
