Regular TIW readers will notice that we almost never feature harness racing tips as part of our daily previews. Dating back several years, we’d heard whispers of systematic race fixing in the sport. No evidence has been made public to suggest that this is the case, but cracks are starting to appear in the sport’s veneer.

In October last year, Mildura harness racing trainers Shayne and Greg Cramp have been banned from the sport for 12 years admitting to race fixing. The pair were arrested after an extensive investigation into two harness races at Mildura. The father and son duo pleaded guilty to race fixing but avoided jail.

Each of the men pleaded guilty to a single charge of engaging in conduct to corrupt a betting outcome. They were sentenced to community corrections orders. Shayne Cramp sentenced to 300 hours of unpaid community work, and Greg Cramp to 200 hours. A Harness Racing Victoria (HRV) sub-committee disqualified the pair from having any involvement in the industry until February 2027.

The spectre of race-fixing arose once again yesterday (Sunday) during the sport’s showpiece meeting – the Breeders Crown at Tabcorp Park Melton to the west of Melbourne – where a number of people were reportedly arrested. Harness Racing Victoria released a statement saying it could not comment on the investigation “in respect to the further progression” on Sunday.

Both Fairfax and News Limited press are reporting that top trainer-driver Nathan Jack was among those arrested alongside his girlfriend and fellow leading driver and trainer, Amanda Turnbull. Jack trains out of Shepparton and Menangle in NSW with Turnbull. They also report that the investigation centred on a race at Cobram on June 22 last year, won by a horse called Airborne Magic.

Tooram Lad, driven by the Shepparton-based Jack ran third at $4.60, ahead of the $1.70 favourite Dehillman. The Herald Sun reported that as much as $30,000 was won on the race by figures connected to participants. Investigators from Harness Racing Victoria’s integrity unit initiated an inquiry after becoming suspicious about elements of the race.
