Updated: July 10, 2016

Online bookmaker Sportsbet is looking to grow its market share by launching a new eSports portal for Australia called Respawn, as it looks to tap into the lucrative emerging market around online gaming with traditional betting products like greyhound racing under severe pressure to survive.

Sportsbet already accepts bets on eSports, which see teams of gamers take part in global competitions across a range of different games such as Halo, League of Legends, Call of Duty and FIFA for prize funds which can stretch into the millions, with a global fanbase estimated at more than 130 million.

The bookie claims Respawn will feature “the fastest ESL (Electronic Sports League) stream in Oceania, live match statistics, odds and upcoming tournament information”. The will put it in competition with the likes of YouTube and market leader Twitch, two of the biggest gaming streaming services.

It will feature tournaments for games including Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, League of Legends, Dota 2, Heroes of the Storm and others. It will also give live odds on tournaments and allow people to place their bets from the platform. According to the Sportsbet blog: “Simply put, it’s the god-mode of eSports betting.”

Respawn also features live stats that update as the action unfolds, live odds on eSports matches from across the globe, upcoming tournament listings and a place to chat with other eSports fanatics. Users will be asked to create an account to log into the site, while Sportsbet customers can log in with their existing accounts, giving the company an increased marketing list.
