FA Cup betting: Country unites behind flood-ravaged Carlisle

Updated: January 10, 2016

Today’s featured FA Cup third round betting preview: Carlisle United v Yeovil Town; Bloomfield Road, Blackpool, England; Monday, January 11, 1am – check here for the latest FA Cup news & results

If you’d invested $100 on each of our FA Cup tips last night, you’d have an extra $425 in your betting account this morning. Let’s keep it rolling with tonight’s card of five Third Round fixtures where our best of the night features two teams from the bottom tier of the League system – Carlisle United and Yeovil Town. Those who don’t follow the news in the UK closely may not realise the dramatic backdrop to this fixture.

Stories of heroism have emerged in the six weeks since the town in north-west England was engulfed by water from Storm Desmond. Tonight’s fixture is being played at Blackpool’s Bloomfield Road because Carlisle’s own pitch (pictured below) remains a brown swamp until new turf is relaid. All around, the stadium still shows the ravages of the rivers Eden and Petteril breaking their banks. At its worst, the water was at crossbar level on the pitch.

The flood destroyed everything in its wake, from computers and merchandise from the club shop to nearly all of Carlisle’s historical archives. Even with insurance money, the cost to Carlisle could reach six figures, a big blow for a League Two club. Never can a run in the FA Cup have been more important, both financially and in terms of raising morale for the whole community.

Coach Keith Curle, a former Wimbledon and Manchester City defender, he has used his experience of life with the Crazy Gang to help overcome the odds. Despite Yeovil’s own proud Cup tradition, the nation will be willing Carlisle to come through and draw a big fish in the next round. Carlisle beat QPR and drew at Liverpool in the Capital One Cup this season but what’s happened since makes this tie even bigger.

Carlisle striker Jabo Ibehre could play after missing their 2-0 loss to Plymouth because of a family illness. Defender Mark Ellis is also available after extending his loan spell from Shrewsbury, while forward Hallam Hope is in contention after an ankle injury. Yeovil will be without defender Omar Sowunmi (ankle) and midfielder Marc Laird (hamstring).  Liam Walsh and Tahvon Campbell could play after completing loan moves from Everton and West Brom respectively.

Carlisle have never faced Yeovil in the FA Cup, though the hosts have already beaten Yeovil this season, coming from two goals down to win 3-2 in a League Two match in October. Yeovil, who face a 415km north to Blackpool from their Somerset base, have only progressed beyond the third-round stage three times in their history, last doing so in 2014 at the expense of Leyton Orient.
