At last – Hird sent packing as Bombers coach (August 18)

In a decision that the Essendon Football Club should have taken three years ago, the controversial reign of coach James Hird (pictured above) is over. The announcement came just three days after the Bombers were humiliated to the tune of 112 points by Adelaide at Etihad Stadium and after years under the shadow of the ASADA and WADA investigations into the club’s 2012 supplements program. Flanked by Essendon players, an emotional Hird told a media conference at Essendon headquarters on Tuesday he decided on Monday night to quit as coach. Assistant coach Matthew Egan, an All Australian defender with Geelong, will coach the team for the rest of the season, with Mark Harvey favoured to take the senior coaching role in 2016.

Jason Day wins US PGA Championship! (August 17)

Congratulations to Aussie Jason Day (pictured above) for his victory in the 97th US PGA Championship at Whistling Straits in Wisconsin. Day became the first player to card a score of -20 or better to win a major with a four-round total of 268 (68-67-66-67) to defeat Jordan Spieth by three shots. The Texan completed a remarkable season with a runner-up finish to go with his wins in the Masters and US Open and claims the world no. 1 ranking.
