Smolda is one of the leading contenders in this afternoon’s InterDom final at Menangle

Not even the lousy weather will deter harness racing fans from the trip to TABCORP Park Menangle for today’s running of the $750,000 TAB.COM.AU Inter Dominion Final. The 10-race program features seven Group 1 races including the Form 700 Chariots of Fire and NSW Oaks, the Cordina Chicken Farms Ladyship Mile, the Camarda & Cantrill NSW Derby, the Bohemia Crystal FFA and the Chambers Challenge Trotting event. In the InterDom final, I’ve settled on #8 Smolda. He stuck with Terror To Love is the NZ heat in a long but blistering sprint to the line after the race had been run at pedestrian pace. It wouldn’t surprise to see him led and give the speed horses on the back row something to catch. The final will be run at 3.40pm this afternoon (Sunday).

Horse racing: Bairnsdale (Vic), Armidale (NSW), Sunshine Coast (Qld), Murray Bridge (SA), Bunbury (WA), Wangaratta (Vic), Orange (NSW – abandoned), Pioneer Park (NT). Harness racing: Menangle (NSW), Kapunda (SA), Launceston (Tas), Melton (Vic). Greyhound racing: Healesville (Vic), Mount Gambier (SA), Sandown Park (Vic), Canberra (ACT), Gawler (SA), Sale (Vic), Geelong (Vic), Albion Park (Qld).

Confirmed bets

Wangaratta R6 #6 Tigerland (win) – Richmond fans will be hoping heir side will be as successful in 2014 as the 5yo namesake in today’s $80,000 Wangaratta Cup. The gelding has won five of eight and made an encouraging return to racing for the first time in nine months with a third at Flemington on February 15.

Bairnsdale R4 #2 Gold Hoffa (win) – Wendy Kelly’s 3yo filly is first-up here after her maiden win last spring, coming after successive runner-up results. As a general rule, I’m a big fan of the class runners in 3yo+ fillies & mares races and there’s not much to threaten the daughter of Bon Hoffa here

Murray Bridge R1 #7 Sunday Chill (win) – I have a lot of respect for the Phillip Stokes stable and his 3yo filly should end her maiden status here based on her to runs this preparation. She was third over 1000m at Morphettville on February 8 then 1.4L second over 1100m at Strathalbyn 11 days later.
